Directed and edited by Felipe Lacerda

The 5 part series “China – The Empire in Reverse”
I am always keen to push the boundaries of my knowledge, of my values and conceptions.
I had gone on a sabatical trip to the state of contemporary art and the non-western world.. So I took adavantage that the year of 2007 showed once-a-decade opportunity which was to check 4 of the world’s top contemporary events. The Venice Bienalle, Kassel Documenta, Skulptur Projekte Münster (SPM) and the Istambul biennial. From there I travelled to Japan and was then headed to spend 5 weeks in China.

In Tokyo I got a call from Globo TV, Brazil’s largest TV network.
Their main news magazine CEO told me:
– “We want you to do “In Cuba”, but this time do it in China.
“Ok”, I said. “But I speak Spanish, I could pass by a Cuban, but I don’t speak any Chinese and and much less look like them..
(I don’t think they could take me as a native, just by my looks…)
– Oh…We see that can be an issue, but we trust you. Bring a series that we will air it on prime time.

So, there I was, in a camera gear shop in Tokio, buying all the gear I needed to make a TV series, Not funny. Lot’s of equipment from manufacturer’s came with their Japanese only versions.
To make the long story short, I brought back a 5 part series, 6 minutes each, that was watched by 100 million people on Globo’s Weekly Magazine.
Then, I made another version, of five 30 minute episodes, that was aired on cable.
The episodes’s titles tell a bit about them:
1) Comunism, Capitalism and other isms.
2) The Country where Nothing is
3) The Language Thing
4) Life, Death and Etc.
5) The Smallest Minority

JOSÉ PADILHA

Film Director

"I’ve know Felipe for over 20 years. He’s a faithful long time collaborator.
Very few people in the industry are able to conduct the storytelling the way Felipe does. I had the privilege of working with him in many projects and profited a lot from his keen and sharp eye and his extreme sensibility for emotions. The documentaries we worked on have been widely recognized and took part in festivals like Tribeca, Sundance, CPH:DOX, Havana, Rotterdam and many others..."

CARLOS SALDANHA

Director of Ferdinand, Rio and The Ice Age

"I had the pleasure of working with Felipe in the short film Pas-de-Deux, a segment of Rio, I Love You, that I directed. He got me very well recommended by weight names in the Brazilian market and did a beautiful job. Felipe understood my vision and execution with great sensitivity and mastery. I'm sure that anyone who has had the good fortune to have Felipe on board, as editor or consultant, will see his film to its full potential."

WALTER SALLES

Academy Award Nominee,Golden Globe and Berlin's Golden Bear Winner,
Director of "Central Station", "Motorcycle Diaries"and "On The Road"

"I had the pleasure of collaborating with Felipe in several other projects (musical documentaries, fiction projects). I have great admiration for your ability to think a movie, and to re-imagine it from the footage. In the same way, the always original options he proposes for the narrative always surprise me positively. He is a highly committed contributor who helps to empower the projects with which he is involved."
